Technical Visit to Airport Traffic Control Complex on 28th Mar 2013

Posted on Thu, 14 Mar 13

A total of 15 persons, including 9 alumni and 6 current Imperial students, joined the technical visit, despite the fact that it had to be held on a working day.  The programme started with an interesting and informative 30-minute presentation by Mr Albert Chung on emergency preparedness and crisis management in respect of air traffic control.  The presentation sparked off a lot of questions from our group.  We were then given a guided tour by Ms Barbara Leung, who was very knowledgeable and patient in giving a very detailed briefing and responding to our queries.  We were taken to the Control Room, followed by a special trip up to Control Tower (thanks to a short spell of calm weather, as our luck has it), to see officers in action using the state-of-the-art equipment.  The next stop was the new CAD headquarters where we were received and briefed by Mr Benjamin Fong and Mr KF Cheung.  All in all, a highly enjoyable and educational visit for those who attended.

——————————————————————————————————–
The ICAAHK is organizing a technical visit to the Air Traffic Control Complex (ATCX) on Thursday, 28 March 2013 to learn how technology and control systems facilitate the safe and efficient flow of aircraft movements.

The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, with around 350,000 aircrafts landing and taking off from Chek Lap Kok.  The ATCX, located in the centre of the airfield, is the nerve centre of the entire air traffic control operation.  Equipped with advanced radar displays and modern communication equipment, the Air Traffic Control Centre in ATCX provides approach control and area control services to air traffic.

Places are limited to a maximum of 15.  Booking deadline is 12 March 2013.  Please email a copy of your ID card and mobile phone no. to Mr Ken Ho (kenho911@gmail.com; mobile : 6706 3186) so that we can apply for entry permits to the Airport’s Restricted Area.

The itinerary is as follows:

14:15 – gather outside Airport Police Report Centre (adj to South Staff
Entrance, near aisle D), Departure Level (7/F), Terminal 1, Hong
Kong International Airport & security check

14:45 – briefing on emergency preparedness & crisis management in
Room 443, ATCX

15:05 – visit to Air Traffic Control Centre and brief visit to Tower (optional)

15:45 – travel from ATCX to new Civil Aviation Dept (CAD) headquarter

World Class Study in London Education Exhibition in Hong Kong on 26th-27th Jan 2013

Posted on Fri, 8 Feb 13

Imperial College, along with King’s, UCL and SOAS, participated in the World Class Study in London Education Exhibition in Hong Kong, which was held in Grand Hyatt Hotel, Wanchai, on 26 & 27 January 2013.  The College was represented by John Laycock, Professor of Endocrine Physiology from the Faculty of Medicine, and Ms Angela Lin, Asia Recruitment Manager of the International Office.

ICAAHK provided support and assistance in sharing experiences and attending to queries from prospective students and parents.  Ken Ho, Dr Paulina Chan, Ms Carmen Liu and KC Liu helped out at the IC booth over the two sessions.  Apart from getting an update on the key facts of IC, all had greatly enjoyed the experience of serving as ambassadors of IC in sharing our own inside stories of what life is like at IC and in London, and in giving careers advice.  Winnie Tsoi also joined the group after the Saturday session to welcome our two overseas visitors over the drinks and dinner gathering, upon finishing the IC joint bowling event with Cardiff in Ho Man Tin, for which she was the co-organiser and MC.

This was a rare occasion whereby ICAAHK teamed up with the College in providing material support to their formal functions, and it represents one of our strategic directions in enhancing our bridging with the College as well as the current students.  This event has proved to be very meaningful for our alumni members.  Sincere thanks are due to all who have worked hard and given up their weekends to serve the College and talk to those bright students and their eager and anxious parents.

Heritage Talk by famous local history enthusiast & founder of Gwulo.com on 24 November 2012

Posted on Thu, 15 Nov 12

As a prelude to a more diversified programme of activities, we have held our first Heritage Talk this year.  We have successfully invited the founder of a local history website, Gwulo.com, to give us a “talk and walk” presentation.

Mr David Bellis founded this dedicated website as he was spurred on by his enthusiasm in historic Hong Kong photographs and maps.  As his collection grew, he picked some of the more interesting stories to share with us.

David took us through his presentation in 3 parts.  Firstly, he showed us techniques to extract key information, e.g. locations and dates, from some of these old photographs.  Secondly, he took us on a historic photographic tour of Central, the Western District and the Wan Chai & Happy Valley areas.  The “talk” part of the session was concluded as he guided us through the daily school trip of a schoolgirl in the 1910s, through a series of photographs, as she makes her way from home at the Peak, to school in Kowloon.

As our audience dwelled on Hong Kong’s historic grandeur towards the end, David guided us through a brief walking tour around Happy Valley and Wan Chai.  We stopped over at several monumental locations and historically significant features in the area, including an old city boundary stone and air raid shelters.  Of course, the end of the tour does not imply the end of our enthusiasm in Hong Kong’s history – Gwulo.com is ever expanding, and welcomes contributions from all members of the ICAAHK too.

Have you ever wondered what Central used to look like, or how the Happy Valley Racecourse was built, in the old days?  Mr Bellis, the founder of the popular website Gwulo.com, will be sharing with us a glimpse of how Hong Kong used to look in its earlier days.

Gwulo.com was profiled in a recent Apple Daily article

Since the founding of Gwulo.com in February 2006, Mr Bellis’ brainchild website has grown to its present size, which by August 2012 comprised 11,000 pages. They include 6,000 photographs, 1,800 places, 800 people and 1,300 wartime diary pages. Popular topics included in Gwulo are old photographs of Hong Kong and researching family history.

Date: 2pm-4pm, Saturday, 24th  November, 2012
Venue: The Leighton Room, Craigengower Cricket Club
Speaker: Mr David Bellis, Local History Enthusiast and Founder of Gwulo.com
Fee: $30 (members) and $50 (non-members) to cover the rent of the room and tea (pay at the door)

For interested alumni, please send email to icaahk@gmail.com and register ASAP as seats are limited and assigned on a first-come-first-served basis.
