“ Career Talk 2011: Demystifying your Future ”

On Wednesday, 21 December 2011, Imperial College Alumni Association Hong Kong (ICAAHK) and Imperial College Public Awareness and Social Service Society (ICPASS) organised a Career Talk, “Demystifying your Future”, at the Craigengower Cricket Club, Happy Valley, Hong Kong. The prime objective of the event is to give undergraduate students at Imperial College a better understanding on career opportunities offered in the banking and construction industry. Following a warm welcome by the Chairman of ICPASS, the event started with a talk on “Career in the Banking Industry” by Mr. Adrian Sou, Director of BNP Paribas. In his talk, Adrain gave the students an introduction to the banking industry, its functions to society, its various departments and activities. He highlighted to the students that the industry is undergoing very challenging times due to economic issues in various regions, notably Eurozone crisis and that this will be a more difficult time to launch a career in the finance industry. Adrain further outlined to the students the skillsets required in the typical graduate roles in various departments, as well as some interview techniques. This was followed by a talk given by Ms. Carmen Liu, Consultant of EC Harris Hong Kong Limited, on “Career as an Engineer”. In her talk, Carmen shared with the students her experience of working in two international consultancy firms, Arup and EC Harris, and her career path – from Graduate Engineer to Chartered Engineer to a Consultant in Construct Solutions. She gave an introduction to the students on the 10 recent major infrastructure projects in Hong Kong and highlighted the prospect of a career in the construction industry and the wide variety of opportunities currently on offer. Carmen also gave the student some tips on how to excel as a professional engineer and highlighted the different engineering training schemes in Hong Kong. Mr. Ken Ho, Deputy Head (Planning and Standards), Geotechnical Engineering Office, further added light to the talk by sharing with the students his wealth of experience on civil and geotechnical engineering, highlighting some of the challenges in the construction industry and giving some tips to the students on how to choose the right job. The event was well-attended with over twenty students and very well-received. The ICAAHK committee look forward to supporting and holding further joint functions with the ICPASS. “

The Imperial College Alumni Association of Hong Kong (ICAAHK) Scholarships are to recognise outstanding new students joining Imperial College London. The application will be open on 15th August 2011 (Monday). The deadline for the scholarship application is 5th Sept 2011 (Monday). Apply now: ICAAHK Scholarship application form 2011

CLARENCE CHENG

It is indeed a privilege to be able to represent Imperial as one of the three ICAAHK scholars this year. Imperial has, so far, been a demanding yet rewarding experience. I am sure Joan and Derek will concur when I say that we are favoured with one of the nicest university campuses across London, not to mention the friendly faces and delighted smiles which made us feel at home.

It wouldn’t have been as easy to settle into Imperial without the help of the different societies available in the student union. I am a member of ICPASS (Public Awareness and Social Service Society), Chinese Society, Sinfonietta and ABACUS, just to name a few. Being one of the main casts in the annual Variety Show in February was another valuable experience where I got to meet and mingle with lots of people. Not only did I learn to manage my time effectively, having been elected the Vice President of ICPASS also means that I will continue to have as much fun next year while striving hard to keep up with Imperial’s academic excellence at the same time.
The 2009 ICAAHK Scholarship recipients are:

CHOI Tung Chun, Jason HO Wai Yin and Jacqueline NG Lok Sze, Connie

Messages from 2009 Scholars

Jacqueline Ho: Imperial College has proved to be a fantastic place in the past year. The academic standards are high and the students are down-to-earth people of high intellect. I have made many new and close friends. Apart from enjoying the many new things that I learn from the course, I am also in the IC squash team as well as the IC badminton team, which call for a lot of team training and matches played all over the UK as well as in Holland. I have just been voted the Captain of the ladies squash team next year. In addition to competitive sports, I am also in the IC Big Band and play the saxophone. Right now, I am playing with the IC Big Band performing in the Shanghai Expo and we shall be going to Beijing next in this 8-day exhibition trip. It is certainly my great honour to be able to represent IC on a number of fronts in my first year. All in all, it has been a fascinating and eventful year for me. I am exceedingly proud to be associated with the College.

Jason Choi Life at Imperial is definitely challenging, but satisfying as well. I feel privileged of being a Maths student at Imperial, we often be regarded as the competitive ones in the city and in every aspects as well. However, these expectations do not come without a price. The intensive course is in depth and well packed. Students here are determined, hard working and clever. Competitions among us are tight and I have to work much harder than before in order to compete with them, however, this kind of life is tough yet solid and fruitful. Life here is more independent than before, I realise how well my secondary school had nurtured and cared for me. On the other hand, I became more mature and gained a lot from the others. I have made a lot of friends through music, my course and cooking. After I have adapted to my university life, I carried on my musical career with my violin. I start playing a piano quartet with my friends at Imperial in a non regular basis. To read Maths, private thinking and group discussion are both essential in order to obtain a full scope on the course. Through different interactions, I have chances to extend my network to people from different backgrounds. If you want me to give examples of activities which can benefit a person and as well making friendships, cooking is definitely one of them. From a guy who can only wash dishes, to someone who can help out with the preparations, and now being a chef who can cook four dishes. Vast amount of help has been given from my friends cooking with me, and a lot of forgiveness due to my over seasoned dishes. There are bits and pieces in my first year at Imperial, and this short note cannot contain all my sweet and sorrow. I am glad that I am elected by the ICAAHK as one of the scholarship holders this year. This prize does not make me a special one, but is a reminder for me to work harder in the future.

The scholars in 2008 are Ms Florence Chow, Mr Calvin Lui and Mr Scott Chan.

The Scholarship Committee wants to emphasize that many more applicants would have been worthy to receive the scholarship had we had more funding. We would also like to thank all the ICAAHK Endowment Fund donors, especially the generous donors who donated specifically for this year’s Scholarship to meet the shortfall in income, which makes the availability of three scholarships possible.

As in previous years, one of the highlights of the ICAAHK’s calendar of events is the Christmas Party. This year’s event at the Leighton Hill Clubhouse attracted a record of 90 members and guests. We started welcoming the first “party-goers” at around 6:30 pm with drinks and refreshments. The crowd swelled gradually, and at about 7:30 pm, our Chairman, Dr Leonard Chow, kicked off the party with a welcoming note.

A multi-national buffet was served, and participants continued to catch up with old friends and made new ones. Halfway through the dining, we commenced our games with the Quiz – a first round of 6 questions on the history of Christmas celebration, open to the entire floor of party attendants. A total of 7 “experts on the history of Christmas” made it to the final round, and after some fierce (but occasionally hesitant) competition, the 3 winners deservedly won their prizes.

As dining drew towards the end, the party atmosphere was further elevated when the Bingo draw was announced. The entire floor started ditching their forks and plates, and clutched onto their Bingo cards. A good dozen lucky numbers had been announced before the first winner emerged – winning a handsome $800 Land Crawford coupon. The rest of the prize winners came forward as their Bingo cards recorded a chain of announced numbers.

With a number of happy prize winners, and the rest of friends catching up before the festive seasons, the party concluded at about 10:00 pm. The ICAAHK would like to wish all members and their families and friends a Merry Christmas filled with warmth, and a Happy and Prosperous New Year ahead.

The ICAAHK has organised a Careers Talk on 15 October 2011 at the Craigengower Cricket Club, with the intention of providing a networking platform for this year’s graduates and the alumni community in Hong Kong. We also had the kind acceptance by 3 IC alumni – Mr Michael Kwok of Arup Hong Kong Limited, Miss Samantha Ko of China Windpower Group, and Mr Sherman Cheung of PwC – as distinguished speakers of the day.

Michael kicked off the presentation with an overview of his career history, and the key milestones which have been instrumental in his career progress. He also shared with the audience his take on the important factors to determining a successful career path, e.g. the adoption of a positive mentality to learning, and a flexible mindset to explore opportunities in China and around the world.

As the second speaker, Samantha gave us an interesting illustration of the transformation in her career path, from a high-achieving investment banker to a senior executive in a PRC-dominated renewable energy business. She highlighted a number of useful career tips for new graduates with some personal experiences and examples.

Sherman wrapped up the presentation by his illustration of the career programme in one of the Big 4 accountancy firms in Hong Kong. He shared with fresh graduates some important aspects to progress in this industry, the professional exams involved, the general working environment, and some tips to excel as an auditing professional.

The audience and speakers together proceeded to a networking session after that. This forum provided all participants an opportunity to expand personal networks, exchanged useful career advices, and in general, enabled a broader exchange of ideas on careers and business alike. Association Committee Members were also present to welcome new graduates to the ICAAHK, and encouraged them to participate in future events.

An Even Bigger Party This Year!
Following the success of last two years, we are delighted to invite you to the third Joint UK Alumni Social Gathering again.

This year we are delighted to invite all UK University alumni to join the event with the support from 19 alumni associations and British organizations. This will be a precious opportunity for you to mingle with other UK university graduates in a warm and relaxed environment. It is our honour to invite Peter Upton, Director of South China at the British Council, to deliver the welcome speech and Iain Lindsay OBE, Deputy Consul General and Director of Trade and Investment at the British Consulate, to be the guest. Don’t miss the opportunity to join such a marvelous event once a year!
